Master of Arts (English)

Objectives:

• 1. Expand knowledge related to the study of literature and language that includes a diversity of authors, genres, theories, and cultural-historical contexts.
• 2. The course aims at giving the students increased insight into the subject with a knowledge of literature and culture, and make them capable of expressing themselves in a clear and concise manner about literary and cultural questions, both in writing and orally.
• 3. Communicate research effectively through oral and written presentations.
• 4. Conduct independent scholarship in ways that consistently demonstrate ethical practice and professionalism
• 5. For Post graduate students who receive a teaching assistantship, develop strategies for the effective teaching of undergraduate students.

Programme Outcome:

• 1. Core Knowledge, Methods, and Scholarship: Students will acquire general knowledge of a range of historical fields that comprise an English Department, and a range of theories, methods, research protocols, and scholarly practices that are necessary for strong research, teaching, and service in our discipline, and that are crucial supplements to undergraduate degrees and professional degrees for students who do not plan to pursue PhDs in English.
• 2. To discuss encompassing major cultural and socio-political discussions of the nation from the past to the present.
• 3. Creative synthesis and critical thinking: Students will learn a number of strategies for analyzing individual examples of literature and for thinking synthetically about works that share a formal, generic, topical, or historical impulse.
• 4. Research/Methods: Students will learn how to design and carry out original and persuasive research in English literature with particular attention to their chosen historical field(s) or research focus.

• Improve your own language skills: An MA in English will improve your vocabulary skills to a huge extent. No matter how good you are, you will notice that words come to mind more easily and that you think in English more often than before.
• Most people assume that becoming a high school teacher is the only future career for someone with an MA in English. While teaching is certainly an option, many other career opportunities are out there. People can choose to get involved in search engine marketing, content marketing, copywriting, journalism, technical writing, news reporting, and more. Those with an MA can also opt to move on to further education to attain a PhD.
• On the successful completion of the course, the graduates are expected to analyze a work of literature in its historical, cultural, political and philosophical context professionally.

The two-year full time MA programme in English is structured very carefully in order to create an academic, experiential and transformational learning environment. Pedagogy:

SBU has a firm belief in providing/ rendering holistic education to develop competitive skills and knowledge to the students. This degree program embeds advanced curriculum in the content areas of English and Literacy within a framework of pedagogical theory and reflection which includes some of the courses related to British Literature, World Literature, Indian Literature in English, Translation Literature, Literary Theory, etc. The students are shaped and groomed through rigorous and frequent activities aiming at continuous practical exposure such as:

Mentoring:

Mentoring programme is designed for providing students a hand to help, guide and listen them as and when needed. Mentoring at SBU contributes significantly to the academic and emotional wellbeing of the student. A student is attached to his/her Mentor for a given period of time which is helpful towards the development of a special bond between the mentor & mentee, resulting towards a greater reciprocation of thoughts and ideas. Mentors guide their mentee in achieving the desired career path. To make mentoring rigorous and value added, mentors maintain a record of mentee and track of his/her performance and attendance regularly.

Eligibility

Passed Bachelor's Degree with English as a subject /Bachelor's of Arts (Hons.) with atleast 45% marks in Aggregate. (05% relaxation in marks in case of candidates belonging to ST/SC category).

Admission Process

Aspirants can apply online to www.forms.sburanchi.ac.in, they may also download the application form from the website of the University and may submit along with the relevant documents to the Information Centre of the University, students may also walk down to the University campus along with relevant documents to the Information centre for counselling and further admission process.

Applicants may submit the application form and required documents at the Admission Office personally or by post. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application form is complete in all respects, and is accompanied by the required documents.

Applicants should attach the copies of the following Certificates/Documents.

• Passing / Provisional Certificates along with Mark Sheets of the qualifying Examinations
• School/College leaving certificate last attended
• Conduct Certificate
• Anti-Ragging Affidavit
• Medical Certificate issues by a registered medical practitioner (M.B.B.S)

Note: Final Year students awaiting the declaration of results can also apply and can also be considered for Admission. However, they have to submit the relevant supportive documents at the time of admission.

SBU has an active placement cell working through out for maintaining good placement record. The placement cell is credited for taking active participation in selection of companies visiting the University for Campus recruitment. It is supported by active placement committee members who have rich industry experience and valuable linkages in the corporate world. Mandatory personality development classes have been introduced, in which students are trained for public speaking, presentations, self-assessment exercises etc.

Summer Internships:

The Placement Cell provides Internship opportunities to the students in the areas of editing, content development, advertising, academic writing, and teaching and non-technical job roles. This helps boost their employability as they are professionally groomed for future job opportunities.

Apart from the academic career in the field of education, a student of MA (English) may aspire for jobs in BPOs, KPOs, publishing, theatre, media and entertainment, corporate, content writing, translation, advertising and public relations.
