Sarala Birla University, Ranchi offers two years of full time Master of Arts (MA) in English. The programme aims to impart an in-depth knowledge of language, literature and philosophy with the historical contexts and the various modes of thoughts and movements across the world.
The MA (English) curriculum, in Four Semesters covers diverse areas of Literature, Linguistics, Criticism and Media Studies, with specializations in Indian Philosophy, Theatre, Cinema and Translation. Language acquisition, self-expression and enhancement of the creative faculties of the pupils are specially focussed upon. Considering the fact that Literature itself is a vast subject, students are given the opportunity to select electives and opt for a specialization of their choice.
Moreover, the programme provides a basic training to the students for academic and non-academic research in Language, Literature, Cinema and Culture. SBU also allows the students to simultaneously opt for a certificate course in French, in order to broaden the scope of the career options for the students.
Students are given opportunities to learn from Scholars, Authors and Editors through seminars, workshops and internships. Through various literary events and expert-talks students are also provided the practical exposure to the developments in the field. The Department of Humanities strongly believes in facilitating an open environment of learning where extensive discussions and debates happen and ideas are exchanged freely.
Overall, the programme aims to develop the analytical and critical skills of the students through the comprehensive study of the various genres. As the enhancement of the cultural consciousness happens, SBU aspires to create morally awakened global citizens capable of social empathy. After completing an MA in English, one can choose to pursue PhD in English or can start working in various sectors such as Teaching, Journalism, Language Translator, Content writer, Freelancer jobs etc.
